A recent study conducted by doTERRA researchers has been published in the Journal of Integrative Medicine and Therapy, offering new insights into the benefits of the AromaTouch® Technique. This clinical pilot trial explored the unique essential oil application method developed by Dr. David Hill, doTERRA’s founding executive and Chairman of Scientific Operations. The AromaTouch Technique combines a moderate touch procedure with eight of doTERRA’s most potent essential oils and blends, designed to promote homeostasis, relaxation, stress reduction, and overall well-being.
While there is substantial research on the individual benefits of touch and topical essential oil application, little has been done to examine the combination of both, particularly in the context of the AromaTouch Technique. This study aimed to fill that gap by rigorously testing the technique's effectiveness.
Experimental Design
The study evaluated both the immediate and long-term effects of the AromaTouch Technique. Researchers assessed participants' physiological responses after a single session and observed the lasting impact of regular application over time.
The experiment involved two groups: a treatment group that received the AromaTouch Technique as per Dr. Hill's protocol, and a control group that experienced the technique with Fractionated Coconut Oil substituted for the essential oils.
Measurements included:
Heart rate
Blood pressure
Mean arterial pressure
Saliva samples analysed for cortisol (a stress hormone) and other health biomarkers
Participants also completed a questionnaire to report their mental state
Results
Both groups showed reductions in the list below immediately following the first Aroma Touch session. The group that received the essential oils experienced more significant changes. :
Heart rate
Mean arterial pressure
Diastolic blood pressure
Stress levels
Salivary cortisol
Despite the study's small sample size, these differences were statistically significant over the long term.
Conclusion
The findings suggest that the AromaTouch Technique is highly effective in immediately reducing stress and promoting relaxation, with sustained benefits when practiced regularly. This research provides strong evidence supporting the technique's efficacy.
